Therese Martin
Age 15

Marie Frances Therese Martin was born on January 2, 1873 in Alencon in Normandy, France. She entered the Convent of the Carmelites of Lisieux in 1888 at the age of fifteen. she died on September 30, 1897.

She tells the story of her years in the Carmelites and the formation years within her family preceding her entry into Carmel in her autobiography, The Story of a Soul. This account tells something of the great love for Jesus that inspired every action of her brief life.

The tenderness and passion in her expression of that love in no way undermined the strength and the power of the asceticism that was an integral part of her daily round of tasks and relationships.

Therese Martin age 15
Therese was a young woman in ordinary circumstances, motivated by a commitment to love that has become a powerful influence in the lives of thousands of people from varied walks of life. "I will spend my heaven" she said, "doing good upon earth." Her "little way" of spiritual childhood and simplicity has a wide appeal.

The Church has proclaimed her patroness of the missions in recognition of her intense concern and constant prayer for those engaged in apostolic works. She claimed that her purpose in entering Carmel was "to save souls, and especially to pray for priests." This simple, yet profound teaching has earned her the honour to be named a 'doctor of the Church'.

St. Therese "I feel that my mission is about to begin, my mission of making God loved as I love Him, of giving my little way to souls. If God answers my desires, my heaven will be spent on earth until the end of the world. Yes, I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth. This is not impossible, since from the bosom of the beatific vision, the angels watch over us..."
"I cannot rest as long as there are souls to be saved. But when the angels will have said: Time is no more! Then I will take my rest... because the number of the elect will be complete and because all will have entered into joy and repose. My heart beats with joy at this thought." St. Therese in death

On October 1st, the Church celebrates the
